Environmentally Friendly FurnitureColinton Furniture is committed to complying with the Environmental Protection Act 1990. All staff are fully aware of Colinton Furniture's Policy and are encouraged to generate new initiatives. The materials, processes and disciplines used by Colinton Furniture shall be chosen, as far as is reasonably practicable, to avoid environmental damage. The following details Colinton's custom made furniture approach to environmental issues: Product The environmentally friendly furniture we make is built to last and usually good strong construction. Over the years of use the appearance may alter through normal wear and tear. Please contact us about refurbishment of your Colinton furniture as refurbishment is much more environmentally friendly than replacement. Raw Materials Particle board/MDF is principally of British manufacture. It is composed mainly of Sitka Spruce, which is produced from forest "thinnings". E1 category composition is specified, denoting a low emission level of formaldehyde. Veneers come from sources, which strive to ensure that no permanent damage is caused to the tropical and temperate forests. White Oak, Maple and Cherry come from North America. Colinton Furniture shall demand proof from suppliers of the integrity of supply in relation to material management and sustainable forestation programmes. Solid timber has been phased out for most panelled parts. The hardwoods that are used for edging materials, handles etc are purchased from sustainable resources. Colinton Furniture is a founding member of the "Trees for 2000" environmental initiative. Solvent & Waste Management Solvent use throughout production is monitored. Continuous improvement programme to reduce solvent emissions is being actively pursued with material suppliers. Hydrocarbon free polishes are used as a policy. Colinton Furniture shall continually investigate the most environmentally friendly packaging materials. Ninety five percent of all waste is biodegradable and non-toxic. In line with legislation, all notifiable waste - e.g. dirty solvents and chemicals are disposed of by licensed contractors to Government authorised sites. Full records are maintained as required. |
